ABOUT ME:

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Matt Johnson, a surgery resident and aspiring pediatric cardiac surgeon who is currently taking time from clinical training to perform research at the University of Michigan. As a resident my hours were primarily spent in the hospital or sleeping so I decided to take my research years and do something I have always wanted to do: train for and run an Ironman. I knew it would be hard to find time to train while also working full time in a lab exploring new options for ex vivo organ systems that could potentially support struggling neonates as well as extend the viability of hearts intended for transplant, but I never back down from a challenge and I don’t believe anything is impossible.

WHY I’M FUNDRAISING:

When I heard about the Kyle Pease Foundation, I was amazed by how closely it struck home and was inspired by Kyle’s story. He and his brother never saw his disability as something that would prevent him from reaching his goal of running an Ironman; they took it in stride and figured out a way to make it happen. The brothers have now helped over 100 athletes with disabilities complete races across 60 events and their organization has raised more than $3.5 million in aid. Knowing that I could support programs such as scholarship opportunities, purchasing adaptive sports equipment and participating in educational campaigns around various disabilities, the choice to fundraise for the Kyle Pease Foundation while I trained for my Ironman was easy.

Please support this inspirational organization by helping me reach my goal of $5000 to be donated fully to the Kyle Pease Foundation. I will be updating my progress here from time to time so check back for updates on my training as well as how close we are to that $5000 goal.

Thank you your time and consideration,

Matt Johnson
