In January 2027, I'll run my 8th Dopey Challenge. It'll be my 10th marathon and exactly 10 years since my first Dopey in 2017, which was also my first full marathon ever. This year, I'm doing something different with it.
I'm running in support of the Kyle Pease Foundation.
KPF creates access and opportunities in sport for athletes with disabilities through scholarships, adaptive and medical equipment, and partnerships with organizations that make it possible for athletes with disabilities to compete in endurance events. They supported their first athlete in 2012. In 2024, their Ironman World Championships campaign raised over a million dollars. In 2025, they supported nearly 70 athletes across 1,320 finish lines, and their mission just keeps getting stronger each year.
As an occupational therapist, inclusivity in sport isn't a buzzword for me, it’s something I've believed in my entire career. Everyone deserves access to the start line. KPF is doing that work, and I wanted my miles to mean something toward it.
For those who don't know the Dopey Challenge: it's a 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon on four consecutive days at Walt Disney World. 48.6 miles total. I ran my first one just to prove I could. Then injuries and surgeries and setbacks made the next few about proving it again. Somewhere in there I fell in love with the race, the community, and the particular brand of chaos that is standing in a parking lot at 3am with thousands of other people who chose this willingly.
I keep coming back because there's nothing else like it. This year I wanted to come back for something bigger than myself.
